3rd upper launch Bay

Post by adamT » Wed Aug 19, 2009 11:59 am

Whoever put those poles out in the bay of the upper launch was a genius.
Precisely where the poles are is where the giant rocks start. You can launch between the poles at low tide if you know what you are doing but even then it’s ankle bangin and a bit squirrelly.

I just wanted to post this as a refresher and to help keep people from following me out that way if they don’t really know what to expect..

I was a bit nervous yesterday when I went out at low tide that someone would follow me and get into some serious trouble on the rocks out there… So here I am doing my part to keep the ambulance trips to a minimum..…

Thanks, we also spent a lot of time flatting the rocks and removing car parts in that area. There is still a V8 block in there, but we buried it.

The idea we had was to launch at the normal spot and come in thru the upper cove (sorta like Sherman). This keeps the traffic flowing. One guy landing at the launch spot can really slow things down for people trying to launch. Also, launching from the cove can make it tough for people trying to come in there.

On that note,

I will just add the obvious..... please when going in or out of the water through the bay simply be courteous (so far everyone I have seen has been super cool). Since I have found myself out there a lot lately I always do my best to stay out of people's way when/if they are coming in or out through the bay. I'm usually on my green 12m (soon to be a red 12m).

did I understand it correctly that you got rid of some of the stones up there.

If yes, that wouldnt be so good as we need even more stones to prevent the serious erosion we have at the upper launch. We loose about 2-3 meters per Year over the last 6 I kite there and there is not too much left. Just think about it on a long time perspective and see that we there will not be too much space left in the years to come.

Seriously we need a higher wall up there not a lower one just to make the flow better. Jack and others even placed about 100 sand bags at the beginning of this season which didnt help a bit.

Removing sharps is ok but we need MUCH MORE stones up there otherwise we need to look for another spot to launch in 2-3 years. I sorted some areal images (time span of 15years or so) together for SFBA to evaluate the erosion and it was bad. Didnt I post them here at BAK?

We did remove some (added them to the wall outside the poles). But given the results of our sand bag experiment, I don't think it makes a difference. There used to be alot more of the reeds in the cove, but they sprayed a couple of times (invasive species). I think the only way to stop the erosion is to build up the berm right around the kiting area (big project).

Damn, I left mine at home. I'll bring it the next time I'm out this way.
