This is very likely true, but the kite constructed versions have a denser foam core (1.5lb vs 1lb) that adds a bit more strength to the fin boxes.

The surf constructed versions definitely have that lighter and livelier feel, but you need to baby them... especially here in CA with our strong waves. Definitely not ideal for aerial tricks or punching through big whitewater/breaks.

Hopefully it comes back good as new!
