Boardsports has a concession permit at Crowne Beach issued by the parks department. As you know there is another kite board shop near the beach. They are not allowed legally to teach lessons within 100 yards of the beach because boardsports has the only permit. This was inforced by police in an incident last year. So it is illegal to teach at Alameda. It is just business not localisim as some have stated.Windseeker wrote:I don't know anyone involved so I can't comment on the childish fight, but can anyone explain the official "laws" involved?
I can understand that Boardsports owns the exclusive rights to commercial lessons but how can this stop someone from teaching a friend or family member to kite if they are not interfering with the lessons Boardsports is teaching? There is no law (yet) stating one must have a licenced instructor to kite.......

Gosh, I shouldn't even get into this but personally I wouldn't want to help someone new at alameda on such a crowded day, so dangerous. None the less, I was teaching my ex-gf last year and I was also approached not to teach which I pretty much disregarded without getting into an argument. I think it didn't escalate because I'm a regular at Alameda, who knows.
I was at the beach that day and I think Sandi landed my kite with a huge smile on her face which I thought was very nice. Jan on the other hand was really irate. Obviously I wasn't there before so I don't know what happened seconds before that but I did see you thorw your board at the instructor guy twice which was incredibly immature of you.
I know that boardsports can't stop you from helping your friend learn to kite . That's silly. This past weekend I took a friend of mine way away from the shack to let her fly one of my smaller kites mostly because I don't want a confrontation with people I see every day and also because there is a lot of people coming in and going out. Which brings the quiestion: where are you supposed to hone your skills? Last year Greg would fetch my kite out of the water (after yelling sheet out, sheet out) every time I dumped it in, and boy was that often.
I think the best thing to do is just avoid the shack on the weekends for safety and political reasons. At the same time pick a spot where there are no people around, it usually happens to be right below the antena.

Who called for a drink or a beer?
Yes, I think everyone has his "private" storry with the shack and "helping out" a buddy. Never got straited out the difference between "business" teaching ( what we had with Jeff last year and which is clear now) and private teaching ( a friend, a wife, a kid). Therefore we have this problems regularily showing up. Once a year and then we are oer it for this. Isnt this the case!
But normally they also ask if you want to get a teacher with them... thats the missing part here in this specific storry.
I clearly call for a beer and 17 knots, G

Look, lets put this to rest once and for all.
I just talked to my friend who is not a lawyer but he plays one on TV, and he said this:
Boardsports has exclusive rights to the following and can enforce it anytime they want....JAIL TIME if violated
1. Teaching kiting in a radius of 1,500 miles from Alameda
2. All rights to any kite produced in the USA
3. All rights to every song written by Neil Diamond and Paul Simon
4. All rights the following words and if you use them you will pay
"Hello" "IS there" Anyobody" "Out there"
5. All rights to Cheese Pizza, Chicken dogs, hamburger (not hot dog)buns
6. They invented the Paragraph, so write in sentences only.
7. Most forms of soft toilet paper and brown and white gravel for driveways, not sure about yellow gravel and pebbles...possibly
more later...............
