Are RRD kites any good for a beginer?

Its not about the brand, its about the model. Every company makes kites for beginners and advanced riders.

Try before you buy means actually use the kite on the water. Most experienced riders will try before a purchase. For a beginner this is irrelevant.

The good news is that there are tons of great deals right now for 2007 brand new kites that you can't go wrong.
We just started our RRD Type 8 buy 2 for the price of 1 promotion, which makes a great deal for 9m, 12m and 15m kites. We need to make space for the Type 9s that are coming in a few days!
We also have Hypertype 7m in stock, complete for $650!!!! (new)

Most importantly whichever kite you decide make sure you get the right safety gear to practice what you learned on your lesson. This time of the year is unpredicatle in terms of wind consistency and swimming back in 56 F water is often common.

I hope everyone is getting some of the recent winds!

i would honestly hold off on buying gear until next season. I know it sucks to wait, but all we have now are winter storms, and you won't learn anything trying to survive out there in the rain and hail and crazy winds. if 2007 kites are cheap now, they'll be even cheaper come spring....

That's probably good advice for someone looking to get into the sport, but many of the rest of us wil be taking trips this winter, so it's actually a good time to sell 07 gear and pick up some 08 kites...

Also keep in mind that while our season is softening (tough to believe with 20mph every day the past week), it is high season for other parts of the country and neighboring world.

As a result chances are that the 2007 deals will be gone by next Spring (of course you never know), as well as Ollie and many others will be ripping it in Baja, Brazil, Cozumel, HI, BVI and other warmer and windier spots.

And of course let's not forget snowkiting, landkiting, buggy kiting which are growing in popularity during the winter months.

With that said it looks like another windy day in the Bay!

Good winds,

Yah. I think that I am going to go land kiting at OB during the winter and then when the new season starts I will be really good with my kite.

That's a good idea. You will have so much skill after one winter of kite mountainboarding, that transition to the water is going to be quick. Also more time to get a good deal on a kite.
