being a 3rd ave regular, I gotta say, I think the 3rd ave folks are probably some of the friendliest people I've ever met. Clearly, someone gave you (Evan) trouble, and that's not cool. I'm not saying you're wrong, because it can take just one person to make someone else feel unwelcome. So, apologies if that happened, but next time, stop by and say hi, you'll see. we're good people.
in response to Pete, I think SF, Peninsula, East Bay are all probably equally good in terms of options. East bay is more accessible to the delta, Peninsula is more accessible to the coast, SF is more accessible to OB, Crissy.

Hey Pete,
As others have said, East Bay is good for proximity to Alameda and not too far from Sherman, and the Peninsula (SF to San Jose corridor) is closer to 3rd Ave and Waddel.
But make sure you consider the traffic! As a bicycle sales rep, I drive constantly, and traffic patterns must be a consideration.
IF you will be doing commute-type driving to the Peninsula or SF, living in the East Bay will be your worst nightmare. If you plan to drive to SF or the Peninsula after 11 AM-noon on weekdays, or just about any time on the weekends, then no big deal. But if you live in the East Bay and try to drive to SF or the Peninsula on weekday mornings, you will want to kill yourself. If you try to return to the East Bay in the afternoon/evening, you probably WILL kill yourself. I normally drive against the grain of this cluster%^($#, and I am amazed that people can handle it on a daily basis.
My 2 cents...
Eric
