cranerpr,
Enjoy the learning process of this new sport! There is nothing like just starting out in kiteboarding. The adrenaline and fear that comes with something new. Some of my best memories are still contained within the first year because of the newness. Since you are probably biting at the bit to start and have to wait for this winter to pass, I suggest buying the DVD called Progression Beginner. It is a very long and detailed video about everything you need to know when starting out. If you have this part down, lessons will be a no brainer and you should get a lot more out of them since you won't has to waist their time and yours learning stuff you could have learned via video. Since you have the wakeboarding down and are familiar with wind from hangliding, you are in a good spot to progress quickly.

thanks for the DVD tip RPskater, sounds like what I need! I've been reading all I can find online flying my trainer kite (Rush 350 Pro, three line) just looking for anything I can to shorten the learning curve. thinking about picking up an inexpensive used 4line to fly in the field by my house just to get a feel for power differences from sheeting in and out!! My neighbors must think I'm strange running cross wind in the field sine waving a kite around tryin not to trip in gopher holes :) !!

I'll second the recommendation to do lessons with Nat Lincoln from Edge Kiteboarding. He'll take you upwind in his boat and you'll have a blast doing downwinders until you're edging hard enough to stay upwind.

He's in La Ventana until April-ish, but here's his contact info:

You got lots of time to practice the trainer. The more you will practice the easier it would be to control the big kite. Once you can fly without looking at the kite, you are close. You can also try a mountain board with your trainer in the winter, that is if the trainer is big enough for this job. If you do keep in mind that crashing on land is painful :) That will motivate you to move to the water :)

LOL yea land is definately harder than water, and I've been hurt pretty good on the water! But a mountain board might be in my future....
