I agree, the times I've passed this area without a problem were when I kept my power strokes and pointed a bit down wind, it doesn't help as much in passing this area smoothly but it sure does help.

Another suggestion from an experience pilot friend is - thermals. He suggested that the shallow water and the temperature differences given the massive plant life on the east causing the thermals to be lower - thus lower winds.

I experienced this Sunday, howling on my 10M but was coming in to land so I cut close to the boat and wham, kite falls. Managed to water start out of there but it felt spooky.

It may be more complicated than assessing an ebb or a flood-

If its topography is clean, uninterrupted then it'll flow with the current in the channel. If however you have it sheltered from the current upstream it should form an eddy ( bernouli's principle would predict this) and that should mean the current will go in the opposite direction as the stream.
What's even more amazing is that if it is protected from an ebb, say because the rock levee shelters it, but it is open to a flood- because there is nothing upstream on a flood- it will always push you downwind in that section!

Just a thought.

Here at Stevenson they have a rock jetty that sticks out into the river. While the Columbia is charging upwind at ~4 knots behind the jetty you get an eddy that pulls water upwind of the jetty in the opposite direction! It's kind of awesome.
