I actually felt very comfortable riding the surfboard back on my weak side. It was a little sketchier getting my foot in the front strap while up and riding and the direction of the waves made it a rougher ride that required my constant attention, but still felt much more natural.
One thing I noticed that I found strange was that as I approached the shore (maybe 300 up to 100 feet offshore) I felt like my speed was picking up and I was heading more upwind as well, with my kite more forward in the wind window. Any idea why that would be? I hadn't noticed that on my twin tip.

Alameda has a bit of a venturi effect close to shore it's possible you were getting extra wind on your left tack and on the surfboard you were more comfortable just going with it and increasing speed, which in turn would give you even more apparent wind and if you pointed higher to compensate as it built congrats you were flying upwind :]
