There are people at every site pulling bozo maneuvers (both windsurfers and kitesurfers), but they are thankfully a minority. When I go and suggest a safer way to do things to a guy I don't know or don't know well, they usually react defensively and deny that they did what they did or that there is anything wrong with what they did. That is frustrating, but I think you have to talk to someone when they are doing something truly dangerous and not just rude even if it is not pleasant. What really helps is if someone that knows the person goes to talk to them, because then they don't automatically go into the defensive and denial mode. I've beenable to point out safty issues to firends at the beach and these are the people most likely to respond to me a make a change, so keep an eye on your buddies as well as that tourist who just rolled in to show you all what a rockstar he is and just let them know in apolite way that there is a better way to do it.
On Saturday, a kiter at Crissy came in downwind at the east end of the beach and walked his kite upwind flying his lines over my wife and son who were building a sand castle. I signaled him that I would land his kite 2 or 3 times and he waved me off. He walked upwind and toward the wall so that his kite was toward the water but over the beach, hung out for a while, and then tired to land his kite by flying it into the sand upwind of my wife and son. The kite bounced off the sand and pulled him forward before it reflew and he established a solid footing. I walked over and asked him why he was to self land the kite and asked him not do do that near people on the beach and he denied the kite had hit the sand even though plenty of people saw it. I asked if I could land his kite and he said he just wanted to hang out there and fly it over the beach. After I asked him a few more times and tried to talk about safety and a community that looks out for each other, he begrudgingly allowed me to land his kite. This is the kind of case where I think a word from more than one person might be in order if anyone else saw it. He figures that he doesn't need to listen to me because he doesn't know me or because I'm a windsurfer or because I'm overprotective. Anyway, this guy is my current nominee for bozo of the season at Crissy.
On the plus side, most of the kitesurfers at Crissy are great, both on the beach and on the water and I see lots of kiters out there making the extra effort to the sail heads up.

Agreed.
So from now on this will be my approach.
"hey, anyone know that guy tumbling through the children building sandcastles?"
"yeah, that's john Doe, i know him."
"O.k. after the kid's parents try to sue him for slicing their kid's ears off, can you tell him he kites like a jackass?"
"o.k. sorry, I'll let him know."

If I'm not mistaken, I think I met him today, a couple of hours ago.
Wind started dying down around 6:30 pm in Davenport so I started packing up. A couple of guys started pumping up.
It was weird after I saw your logo, I was puzzled, why is Yuri down here so late in the day with marginal wind conditions pumping his 10 meter Rhino? Turned out to be somebody else, So I went to them and talk to them to make sure they knew what they were doing.
At the time I was packing up after my session, and they were rigging, there was no surf and the wind was mellow, basically Alameda conditons at the time, so I guess it was safe for the guy to go up.
I gave him a few pointers. He was with his friend Sebastian who was a pretty advanced kiter, so I guess he was the support. Yeah, its weird seeing your kite always downwind of me Yuri. I was always using you and Tianna as my upwind markers whenever I kite in Alameda. The dude flying your kite is on vacation visiting from Germany.
Oh yeah, not trying to poke fun at the guy, :P , he rigged his kite wrong, and I had to assist him and help him rig it properly, sorta similar situation with what happened at Sherman.
I think a few kind words and some good advice made his day and he was able to kite safely for half an hour.
