If you are not familiar with the plover you need to talk to the crew down at Pismo beach. A section of beach that attracts a lot of wind is shut down for months a year due to the plover. No one has studied the affects of kites the size we use verses the small kites that kids fly for fun which is what the study mentions. Not sure what is going on with the plover up here but it is true that areas have been shut down due to this bird. It is a real threat and I would take it seriously.

Too bad we don't have the ATVs and off road vehicles providing a safe buffer zone between us and the Plovers like they do in Pismo...

This shit really happens, it can be pretty serious...
Perhaps we should set up a Auto-BOOMER!!!! so birds wont set up shop while were not there!!!
Really they have these canisters that fire off a round every 5- 10- 20 minutes, sounds just like a shot-gun and keeps out birds- BOOM- BOOM- BOOM-!!!

We could leave for winter and find birds nesting in our spot come spring!!
Lets start a fund raiser for the Boomer!!

scary to think that a little old lady from Marin with her Audobon friends can actually shut places down. I believe this will be a real problem unless we organize. The coast is in jeopardy North & South. Marin probably has more amateur Ornithologist than anywhere else in the US, we are stuck with them. Let's just hope they don't figure out where the Levee road is. Ocean Beach has many Snowy Plover signs, you know they want it shut down, they are coming. With all the elephant seals and plover nests at Piedras Blancas I am surprised that it is still open. Time to make our voice heard....

Hello Kiters,

Its all about the Synergy of the Ying and the yang which creates a mathematical balance between the kiting community and the ornithological preservationists.

3rd? Not saying it couldn't happen, but it would be incredibly silly if it did, considering massive airplanes fly overhead all day. I wonder how the birds feel about that? I wonder if the plover patrol will shut down SFO?

Truth is, if those birds are endangered it's because we've paved over most of the coastline (bay and ocean) for condos and seaside mansions, destroying their habitat.[/quote]

Here is a link to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife website regarding the Snowy Plover. Species is listed as THREATENED. Good collection of studies and reasearch on the subject. No documentation I can find since 2007, however.
