Ilove the last line. You could die, but if you survive you will be prosecuted. That sign cant be in the states.

So are you suggesting a death threat sign at the sherman launch?

Move your kites or you could die.

Dewey, you know I'm a fan of this topic. I am constantly landing my kite in new places anticipating my next launch. As J13 said earlier, I prefer people to not catch my kite upon landing. Only two seasons ago, nobody else would launch in the back. That's how we used to do it back when we didn't have a high tide launch so I naturally went back to this system when the front launch got too crowded. I initially said that if you weren't capable of self landing back there, you shouldn't use the spot. Now you can pretty much always count on someone catching your ktie back there so everyone uses the launch. I have seen some close calls from people who don't realize that there is really only one safe way to launch your kite back there (well two if you count Carl's method). Launching the kite on top of the hill is the only dependable launch. Just b/c there is now room does not mean that launching in the middle of the grass is an option.

I feel it is a lost cause. Unfortuneatly for those who travel to kite, it is a relatively selfish sport. I want mine and I want it on my schedule seems to be a pretty standard tourist opinion, however I've found some psuedo-locals have little regard for the launch as well.

I dont' believe it will get better. I have on a few ridiculous occasions (with the help of Airess) moved every kite to the perimeter. Anyone who has a problem with this should really come and look for any of the angry redheads. If it's a crowded weekend, be ready to launch within 2 minutes of laying out your lines or expect your gear to be moved by the time you get back.

Amen Gabe!

You were the first person I saw launch back there. At the time I thought you were crazy, but as you said it's out of necessity. Is it really necessary to have to move again? Or do we shame the real estate greedy kiters to move their kites? Every time we move it's to an area that is less safe. If we don't bring it to everyone's attention now where will we be launching from next year???

Damn, I have been missing all the fun... I am with Gabe and Dewey.. The sad part is the people that are leaving there kites out have already been told. then they wonder why the so-called locals give them shit. This issue is going to keep getting worse if People don't get how things work. Signs are not the answer. Common sense is.

Ha,ha, Ed. That's funny. Common sense. Didn't you hear they stopped teaching that in school in the 1990s. I think some states are considering making it illegal. :?

dewey I tried to make it very clearl to you, swearing at people here or the beach is not okay. Your behavior is far worse than someone leaving their kite out. It is totally unacceptable to threaten and swear at people regardless of whether your session wasn't perfect. You need to be aware of how you present yourself and why you might be poorly received at the beach and here.

In any case someone at the beach will always end up doing more launches/catches than others, its just how it goes. Others will always be inconsiderate. If you want to educate people take a moment to explain super clearly and carefully why there is an issue and define the preferred method. I am totally supportive of clearing the launch area. Yes it is common sense and polite. Many people are not considerate and unfortunately it seems to be the same people who are inconsiderate everytime. The truth is if they need to be told again and again.

That said, I can't condone the tone many of you suggest here. It simply is outside of the acceptable. You are sharing the launch with others. They have other ideas about whats cool at their launch. They have the right to be idiots or whatever. If you want them to work with you, you need to be polite and kind and helpful. The idea that any of you were the first to launch there and therefore have some local status is the most gross exaggeration I have ever heard. That beach goes way back in time before any of you were around. It doesn't wash here or anywhere. So please understand your swearing comes off poorly and doesn't make your point well. You can hopefully learn from this that some methods work and some don't. Be vocal at the beach, don't expect that spouting off about a bad day at the beach online will solve anything, it wont because your not dealing with the problem or with the people.

Dewey I hope you understand why I don't like your tone. I do support managing the launch area. Be nice about it or go home, that's the only option.

That's the thing about online chat, is that there is no way to understand one's "tone." What Dewey is saying is an obvious problem, so why not post about it? Thats what the site's for. Start it here, then back up what you say on the beach. I think it's more counter productive to tell someone you dont like their tone then to just acknowledge what the problem is. We all express ourselves in different ways.

Plus, everyone on here who actually knows eachother, knows that calling someone a dipshit is still said with love.

This is an issue that is bound to be heated and I've looked at the launch with dismay and been somewhat irritated before, but emotions about what is right or wrong aside, Paul B. is right about how to approach it at the beach, in person with your fellow kiters. It's cool to go off about it here, but reason, calm and a general sense of helpfulness will go much farther than adressing someone in any other way. If I think of how I would respond, I would be much more receptive to someone talking to me in a reasonable manner about it. It's old news now, but some time ago after losing my kite over the lower launch, my feelings about my actions and how to prevent the same kind of thing from happening again were much stronger when kindly spoken to by a friend, an SI local, rather than an unknown individual who chose to start the "Ollie G, you're an idiot" thread on iKite. My response to him would be on par with how he chose to address me, while my response to the friend who spoke to me that day at SI was more humbling and make me think instead of being defensive.

The only fix to these problems is if all of you dont kite here any more and leave it all for me!

Take those damn bouys with ya too!

just kidding :]

No quick fix for this one people, we just need to come to some ongoing terms.
