I've seen a bunch of whales in Bodega Bay. Hump back?? Well, they had humped backs - and that's my scientific opinion. It was in the Spring and they were spouting up a bunch of water from thier blowholes. Personally, I don't like kiting inside Bodega Harbor because the water is too shallow and the wind is hecka gusty on NW becasue it comes over the Head.
To surferdk's question: HMB harbor IS the spot for flat water in winter S storm winds. Complete butter inside the harbor with WW III just south of the break water jetty. The boats are docked due to the nasty seas. Like Mayham says, just drop everything when the south winds blow. Stomach virus, diareah, sick kids, all of the above - whatever works just get it!!!

I was checking out the "wind statistics" on windfinder for Bodega Bay, and it looks like Bodega gets a fair amount of wind all year round. The only downside is that you have to pay attention to the tides.
The other option is Tomales Bay. I have windsurfed Tomales, and don't recall encountering low tide issues there.
Is there anywhere in Bodega where low tide is not an issue?

There's no place on the east side of Tomales Bay to launch a kite; all the beaches are very narrow and short.
I guess some folks go to Dillon and launch on the Bay side, but it seems like the dune bluff would make the wind right there pretty funky.
And a friend told me there are a few beaches on the west side of the Bay near Inverness that are kiteable.
The wind in Bodega Harbor sucks because it comes over land before it hits the water. It's all over the place. Plus, there are obstacles in the water (oyster trap poles that would shred your kite into numerous pieces if you hit them)
If I'm going to drive to that part of the coast, I'm kiting in the waves at Dillon.

It says 10M, but it's really a 9.

Probably not Humpbacks, they're more pelagic and wrong time of year, best bet would be gray whales.
Low tide can be an issue at Tomales, muck up to knees.
Tomales has a few good launches on east side(Millerton and Marshall), grass and mud launches near Inverness, and a couple of large beautiful sandy desolate beaches on the northwest side.

Is there a prefered launch site at Dillon Beach, or is the whole beach a launch site?
Is this an advanced only site? What can I expect when I land on the beach there?
I am imagining launching on the beach, eating it in the waves, soiling myself, and then becoming shark food all in the space of 2 minutes.
