Bob,

You may feel the pain now, but it will leave you with nothing but good memories! I hope everyone there is celebrating whatever it is that makes them happy this holiday season. 5 pages of this thread have pretty much confirmed what I will be planning for a trip, and I can't frickin' wait! I guess it'll be 3-4 weeks and I'll be there.

Bob, no need to hold back on the stoke of the kites, the Type 7 has me doing things I've never done before with serious confidence. They are sick. Type Wave + ZH = Type 7.

had to take it easy yesterday as I whacked my foot on a rock.....ready to rock today, on our last day, but this looks like the first day with no breeze! Dohh....Looks like it will crank tomorrow as we fly back. All that talk about the rental car with Travelocity really hurts to the guy who did not know about that deal when booking this trip......

Well, 7 days out of 8 is not too bad...no complaints here....Time to knock down a cervesa and pack up the toys.....see you guys on the water in a few months...

later,

bob

OK...back in town. Good trip, yada yada...On that way back to the airport, we kicked it in Los Barriles for a bit. Way more developed each year we check it out. Some guys out out at north beach, and looked pretty fun. There was as much wind on the water as there seemed to be on the Baja Joes ikitesurf meter for today. We went by an old hang out, Rancho Buena Vista. No kites or windsurfers. I have had windsurf trips to that spot at least 4 times in the 80s and early 90s. Jay Valentine used to have boards, then Vela, then Mr. Bill. Nobody there currently. I am thinking that when I go back to Baja, I want to line up some buddies and hit Rancho again with kites. There is a curved downwind beach like Baja Joes, a really nice break when there is swell right off of a point, on which sits a bar that is staffed more hours than you should probably indulge in. It looks like you could still pull off our old routine of charging a margarita to your room in the bar, while dripping in your wetsuit after a sesh, before you head to the hot tub. All meals included.

I think this place went out of favor due to the increased development 2 miles or so upwind at the main town. However, since most of us bring our own kite gear, I am wondering why I do not see any kiters there now. I know guys end some downwinders from the main area down at Buena Vista, but why not stay there? Is is too pricy? Does the main clientele of fisherman crowd out the kite guys? I think it would be the premo spot to head down with some buddies, as families would dig the facilities waaay more than La Ventana. Ping Pong, shade, wind break, hot tub, pool, excellent bar and food.....The owner, Mark Walters is a pretty good guitar player - we used to have some nice jams....Say Zeev - any interest for next year?

Just wondering what you are usually riding in at Ventana. Can you get away with trunkin it or usually do you need a shorty?

Checking out this thread for info on new RRD kites, i was there same time as "Big Dave":
I must say it was getting a bit crowded in LaVentana (especially at the campground) as Christmas approaches. Ask Joe and Angie about AeroMexico-- just assume they won't check before they jibe! Kite-bumpin' kids with no sense of right of way. How do you say "starboard" in Spanish?
First of all it was not nearly as crowded as December 04.

Second, all 15 of the "AeroMexico" crew strongly felt it was YOU who got in everyones' way and had no clue about right of way. On one tack i was happily riding really far out, far away from everyone, as i turned my kite, yours was right on top of mine, you had been following my line, and it seemed you enjoyed putting your kite on top of everyone, and not letting anyone in or out from the beach. There was so much space and you had to ride right behind me. Of course i did not look back, anyway, this was just one instance. There were many more.

Other than that i have never seen anyone hold so much wind as Dave, he was on his 13 even when i was lit on my 8 (85kgs.)
Hope to ride the bay area some day, i grew up in Portolla Valley Ranch, close to Palo Alto and my parents used to windsurf in Redwood City and San Fran Bay
Cheers from mexico,

You know, it's amazing, we've had people here from USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany, South Africa, UK, Carribean, and more I don't even remember. It's global, baby.

Hey Whitecap,
No, i was on a bright yellow caution 12 2006 with red struts and flames, red and blue 8 meter caution, underground flx 128 and caution redline 122 2006. The guy you are talking about is Jorge from La Paz, and you are right, he is a great great rider, really nice style, he was on an 06 green yellow white rhino 12 most of the time.
I saw some type sixes, and a black type 7 riding below bajajoe, pulling some nice tricks. As usual, glen a.k.a. "Fabio" was going huge on his ZH 10.
Best winds, and check out the north coast of yucatan during March-June it is windier than la ventana, and warm, www.marinasilcer.com. But the bay area is nuking at that time isn't it?

Good call on Baja over Florida. I just got back from a week and a half in the keys and fl west coast and only had a couple kiteable days. Some great settings (particularly in the Keys), but if you're taking the time to travel there, might as well go for the consistency of Baja.

The highlight of the trip was seeing two dolphins pop out of the water right off the beach as I was heading out... Of course had I seen fins like that around here I probably wouldn't have been so happy :)
