I saw one breach about 20ft from me a couple weekends ago; it was scary! Assumed it was a grey whale, but now recognizing it was probably one of these humpbacks.

Not cool when kiters don't stay away 100 yards and kite nearly over top of them, and it appears jibed back to them making them deep dive to get away.

I don't know that I'm smart enough to presume to know whether or not the whales thought the kiters were scary or fun Charlie

I almost ran over Humphrey at Candlestick in the 90's on a windsurfer. It was VERY scary.

I remember my mom taking me out to some spot along the Delta back in '85 to watch back when he first visited. I missed him in '90, but saw it on the news. Amazing that he came back twice. I'm glad you and Humphrey didn't collide.

Aloha, what I've done for years on boats, windsurfer, kiting, and SUP, is when you see a marine mammal turn opposite direction. If they want to check you out they will follow, if not keep going and avoid them.
Last El Nino, bottlenose dolphins came to Stinson Beach and they were playing with us, following almost underneath catching hydro wave from board and staring at us eye to eye. Pretty neat, but only after a few days they came up to us, after that they came to join us each time we sailed there for about 2 weeks.

I'm glad this made news. Did not realize that we needed to keep our distance. I have encountered seals, and whales out on the coast and did what this guy did. I didn't realize that we needed to keep our distance, will be doing that from now on.
