Good time to Check your Harness Hook Knife !

Hi Guys
After the accident in Alameda, I went to check my harness hook knife.
Mine was pretty rusted (I cleaned it with WD-40), and although I was 100% sure it was on my right side it was actually on the left flank of my harness. I just forgot I changed harness model some time ago...
Hopefully I was doing that check at home, not in emergency, or I would have drown as well...
Just a reminder it can happen to anyone...
Which side is yours ?
Take care !
Greg

I thought the last accident at Alameda was heart attack related, not tangle. Do we know the details? I have a hook knife, but not sure how functional it is. I also bought a medical scissors, but don’t know where to attach them.

Actually you are right it was at crissy, just mixed the two. Shaken to hear about deaths from kiteboarding in our own community.

Not a heart attack, drowning only.
I recommend the Gerber Strap Cutter, way better than the knives that have two little thin razor blades.

I am so sorry to hear that it was drowning accident. Do we know if he had a vest and/or line tangle? It feels awful, so preventable with so many kiters at Alameda. Time to start discussion about full time spotters and jet rescue at Alameda and 3rd. I would gladly pay annual membership fee to support this program.

Boat rescue is available in other countries where the wind is offshore or tricky spots.
It's a good idea at Crissy and maybe 3rd. Not sure about Alameda - as the beach is long and the wind is side on shore.
I agree, if available at Crissy, I would pay an annual or daily rate.

That Gerber knife looks good, but the sheath shown in the same link looks useless for taking out on the water.
I just got the Gill harness rescue tool for my Trap harness:
http://www.apsltd.com/harness-rescue-to ... utter.html
It is similar but the sheath is good for putting your harness webbing through, thus keeping it securely attached. The knife itself still needs to be independently attached with some cord to my harness, so I dont lose it if I have to pull it out in a hurry.

That looks pretty cool, give a review once you try it out.
Here is a video of the Gerber strap cutter, not endorsing the kite store, just the video to show the Gerber strap cutter. I do not think they even carry it at this store currently. Talks about the case/clip at 3:13.
