Which Surfboard to buy?

My wonderful wife gave me some birthday money to buy a new kiting toy and I am ready to buy a kite surfboard. I have seen many LF's and Norths around and wondering if anyone can compare and/or recommend what I should get. I have been kiting for around 3 years and ride mostly at Crissy, Sherman, Berkley, OB and Stinson some. I weigh 200lbs and am interested in a board that will be fun in the surf, and gives me more low end than my TT (underground FLX 132). Any info on pro's/con's of the different boards would be great.
-thanks

Neptune Prisoners of wind boards are shaped here in our conditions for our conditions. Everyone on them here loves them.
If you are goofy footed I would recomend the 5'6" quad surf. If you are regular footed and want to do some real down the line surfing with the kite go for the 5'9" thruster.
you can find them at

Hey, I ride an LF 5'8" and love it. You're more than welcome to try it out, I'll probably be at Stinson tomorrow actually. Send me a PM.
one word of advice, TRY before you buy. The different directionals ride really differently. Some are more wave-oriented and have a lot of rocker (for faster turns), which causes them to have trouble going upwind. Others have a lot more volume which works for small wave days, but aren't as maneuverable.
In other words, there are a ton of variables in directional design, so spend some time trying out your options.

I ride Liquid Force Havocs. Most likely a white one....I'm planning on hitting Stinson, but I'm worried I cracked a rib on the downwinder, so it all depends on how much it hurts tomorrow morning...

Big boys should try the Rocketfish 5'10". I've ridden mine for hundreds of hours this year with awesome perfomance results on everything from flat water to massive surf. GREAT board. Also agree that the POW boards perform very well based on what I've observed. MUCH smaller though...

I rode Underground directional 5'-4" and I liked it so much I bought one on Saturday. Helm has a demo at the 3rd AVE shed.

If the $ is still burning a hole in your pocket, and you want more advice, I would second the North recommendation. Yes, I ride for North.....
This year John Amundson shaped 3 shapes: 5'6", 5'9" and 6' for North: different construction from past years and improved shapes.
A big guy like you should go with 5'9" or larger. I happen to ride a custom 5'9" board, shaped for me by John Amundson. It's a dream to ride. You are welcome to try it, I'm @ the delta frequently, just ask around for Zeev.
The POW boards are super sweet, and supporting local bros is a good route to go.
I have a repaired (fin box) 5'5" board made by John Amundson for sale, if anyone is interested. Send email to
zeevgur123@yahoo.com for more info.
Good winds, Zeev.
