What To Do With Your Car Key

I've seen a number of posts on various forums recently complaining about how car break-ins are increasing on the beach, usually as a result of thieves finding the key.
I used to leave my key in my duffel bag on the beach, but no more. I purchased one of the those "waterproof" pouches from REI, but it let water in. I have an electronic key so I can't afford to let it get wet. Now, I triple-bag it using Baggies or the equivalent from the grocery store, and then stick it down the front of my wetsuit. Works like a charm. It never moves, I can't even feel it when I'm riding, and my key is bone dry when I'm done even if I've been in the water a bunch of times. A few tips: 1) press all the air out as you seal the bag; 2) Make extra-sure each bag is tightly sealed; and 3) Neatly fold the inner bags into rectangles before placing them in the outer one. If you crumple a bag, or fold it an angle, it can lose its seal.
I've had a lot more peace of mind since I started doing this.

I have the DryPak brand and it works great. Even put my cell in it when I went to Maui as they just break right into your car there. Love that Aloha!
You can also bring your valet key and Caribbean clip it to your harness.
Sad sad world we live in that people break into your car and steal Hello stuff!

Wrap it in two unlubricated condoms.

I went to the Honda dealership and purchased one "dumb" key for $14. It doesn't have the electronic parts, but it will unlock the car and even turn it on if I needed. It fits in a little key pouch that is built into my wetsuit.

Good to know that is an option. Dreading my next car purchase if smart keys are the only option.

I have a Honda and need a backup key so I called them today. Yes, indeed--they'll make a "dumb" key for $15. But they said it won't start the car. It's still worth having, though--makes more sense to leave the pricey electronic key in the car and take the all-metal version out into water. Thanks for the tip!

If you do leave your electronic key in the car just make sure to not show anyone that your doing that. That is a sure fire way to get your whole car jacked.

Good point. My keys usually go in the trunk.
