The swell is huge right now (21 ft, 17 sec) but forecast to get even bigger in a few days
Watch as it goes off the color scale (white) at the end of the week.
That kinda energy could come through the gate if the angle is right.!

Has it ever made it into the bay?? I thought it wrapped into fort point, but that's the only "bay" break.

There was a pretty good swell in Alameda on Sunday. Yesterday it looked like you could skip a stone all the way to SFO.

The shallowness of the bay is what kills the swell.
I've seen big ocean swell (not ebb-induced) out from Crissy.
Alcatraz and Angel Island might be doable if the angle is right.
Still, I believe if the swell is humongous, the angle is right, tide is right, then some energy could reach Berkeley.
In fact, some of the liveaboards at the Marina have told me that during the last Mavericks contest the boats were rocking all night (I don't think there was a wild party involved).

I think that that may have been a wind swell (not the same thing).
I think it would be cool to get some 5-6 foot barrels in the bay. I'd be down for that.

I've seen waves break almost all the way across the golden gate channel. Years ago they closed the gate to shipping traffic due to high surf - the channel was completely closed out.

I knew that. I was just sayin'.
