ikitesurf membership worth it?

Post by kelelia123 » Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:48 am

So my automatic yearly billing has come around. Every year, i'm a little taken back by the cost for basic service. $89

Wanted to know what most bay area people are using to know what the wind is doing as an alternative to renewing my membership.

Thanks!

what's it blowing right now?? If you want to know, then yes. Forcasts suck. Half way into the season, go monthly and cancel in Oct.

I guess the answer depends on:
How much you love to kite
How much you drive to score killer sessions
How much you value the sweet feeling after a sick session
What kind of car you drive.....

For me, where a fill up is around $60, knowing where it's blowing and where they think it's going to blow is definately worth it. Yes the forecasts sometimes are a bit off - it's a very complex thing and they do a great job at it....try it yourself somtime, you will appreciate what they do.

Get some, Z.

For looking at the general flow of the wind I think it is worth it, but I am a numbers/graphs nerd and like to quantify things.
There is nothing else that sheds as much light on the micro-flow patterns of wind that you get around the SFBay, where it can crank in one place and be dead 5 miles away.

For alternatives you might pay attention to all the webcams popping up, what the fog pattern looks like, NWS detailed discussion, and of course looking at the trees blowing outside your window, or an old-school blind go out...man I haven't done that in years...

Bottom line for me is that each year it saves me from getting skunked a couple times and clues me in on some unexpected sessions a couple times, and that makes it worth while.

Every time I am someplace with no computer (I don't have a pager or web on my cell) and head to a launch to "just see if it's blowing", I get skunked.

I'm surprised that Ikite doesn't raise the price of the service every time gas goes up. Getting skunked when I'm leaving from home costs me about $30.

But if you don't have one, you might drive yourself crazy thinking it's great wind everywhere. It saves me time letting me settle down and get something done knowing it's not really that windy out. Of course if it is windy, then it does tend to corrupt...
