Fly Alaska SFO or SJO. ..direct to Cabo.
Talk to Gary @ BBB rental car. Good guy. No insurance scams.

We flew Virgin direct from SFO to SJD for $350 last minute two Februaries ago, with no extra charge for my 5'2" 'golf' bag. Short flight, comfortable seating and good music too. We live near SJC and there was an Alaska direct flight to La Paz for over a grand.
I recommend the rental car company that doesn't change the rate you're quoted once you're there and also require you to buy extra insurance... now, if I can only remember their name...

Again, call or email Gary at BBB Rental Car. Info is on my previous post.
He is a Gringo. No games.
I paid $300.44 for the week. He gave me a mini van cause he was out of cars. Normally has Ford Taurus or mini vans.
I got f'd by Budget rental car the first two weeks of February for a mini van. Embarrassed to say how much....but it was half way between $1000 & $2000.

I have booked Alamo a few times and they have been very reasonable. You need to book before you show up. I have spot checked Amex vs Costco (doesn't do Mexico anymore) and Expedia and Alamo's website usually yields the best deal.
I haven't tried BBB but I give him a shot next time.

PS, I flew United last time, roundtrip, $408.00. They show on there website a $100 charge for kiteboards etc., but they only charged me for a second bag fee each way.
United is definitely no my first choice, but they weren't as bad as in the past. Checking in at the Int'l terminal at SFO was a definite plus. There were no lines on that day. I guess I just got lucky.
