New to the area

Hey BAK,

I'm fairly new to the Bay Area and fairly new to kiteboarding. I've wakeboarded most of my life but there doesn't seem to be much of that around here, so I'm switching over to kiteboarding ::)

I've been reading through the forums and location profiles and found some great information. I've also taken a few lessons and feel ready for my first day solo... I was thinking of hitting up Alameda since I heard it's the tamest in the area (I live in SF).

Any other final tips for someone new? Anyone going to Alameda on Friday?

Welcome to the bay!
As far as wakeboarding goes, you have lake berryessa not too far from here.
As far as kiteboarding goes, yes, alameda is the bomb for beginners since you have a long sandy beach with cross onshore condition and lighter wind than 3rd ave.
3rd ave will be your next move though, once the wind starts dying in alameda.
few lessons? land lessons? water lessons? did you play plenty with a trainer kite? know how to do a self rescue?
What size of kite did you buy? how much do you weight?
etc... all those info will help us to help you.
I'm going to Pismo from thursday to sunday. But you'll find plenty of folks ready to help you at crown beach on friday if we get that clearing wind kicking in.

When you go to Alameda try to go on a lower tide, that way you can stand up when you fall. Also go to bodega bay harbor (need 3' of water on the tide chart).

Once you can stay upwind head to Third... then to Sherman.

I think the Alameda season is basically spring. Third will be good through the summer. You do not need a radio at Third unless you are going into the channel alone. Stay near shore and do not go out in west winds (offshore). You can always bring a cell phone. I heard tying it off in a rubber works good!

You guys shouldn't need a radio at 3rd - but I like where your minds are at. I will occasionally carry my VHF/iPhone sling when I'm out there training.. as you never know when it might come in handy to help a fellow kiter you may come across in a 911 scenario (or yourself for that matter)

Alameda and 3rd ave have plenty of on water support if you're kiting in the main area. If you get into trouble chances are there will be a few people who will come by and check-in to help out. Once you can maintain ground kiting at Alameda and are confident in your self-rescues 3rd is a great place to go for some kickin' wind to make it all click
