Cabrinha Bar, unintended safety release

Post by BeniciaWind » Wed May 30, 2012 8:08 pm

I just landed a jump, my board had fallen off. My kite was still in the air, light wind. I turned to look for my board and the safety poped. Bye bye kite. This is an older Cabrinha pulley bar 2006? hooked to my 14M Contra. Once I got back to shore, i checked it out and it all looks fine. This ever happen to anyone else? Any ideas what happened? Now i don't trust it.

Perhaps the answer lies in the question

Leash attached to chicken loop. I think I'll move it to above the safety release just in case this happens again.

Maybe something is worn or streaching. I think stress test it somehow and see if I can pull it apart.

The cabrinha setup is a bit different than other kites:
The leash connects to the chicken loop, and if you do a quick release (QR1), the "landing line" keeps the kite attached to the chicken loop, and the chicken loop stays on the harness. The chicken loop never opens up, like in other brand kites.

in my old 2009 cabrinha bar, which i recently stopped using,There is also QR2 which is to release the landing line itself from the chicken loop which will then completely disconnects the kite. Problem was due to old velcro, the QR2 sometimes would get discoonected by itself, so if I pull QR1, boom the kite would fly away (happened to me in HMB once - luckily the kite ended on the beach)

After that HMB incident I stopped using that bar and bought a new 2011 bar which I am happy with!

That is why I commented earlier that a lot may have to do with the age of the gear

BeniciaWind - can you confirm that you have a similar setup with QR1 and QR2 (meaning QR2 disconnects the landing line) If so you probably had the same thing that happened to me In HMB
that time.

Or PM me and we can meet on the beach sometime and compare notes.

Attach above release. Just make sure your safety line has a QR on it as well. I had this happen a couple times before moving the attachment above the bar release. The kite depowers so much already with the bar released that this is fine for 99% of situations. The other 1% you can pull your safety leash release.

^^What he said. The older Cab safety releases were pretty easy to accidentally trigger, it didn't take much pushing force to pop them. Not a terrible thing, actually, assuming your leash is properly set up.

Thanks for all the input. I'll move the leash above the release, at least i won't have to swim in if it happens again.
