Coastal Cleanup Sat Sept 19th, 2009

This Saturday Sept 19th is the International and CA Coastal Cleanup day.

Get of your duff and help make your local launch nicer.
I'll be at the Racetrack beach, which has potential to be a beautiful beach (Golden Gate view and all) but unfortunately is pretty trashy. At last year's cleanup I saw 2 other kiters there (that I knew) out of a couple hundred folks.
Racetrack beach is also being considered for incorporation into the Eastshore State Park, and the master plan I saw had the beach improved, going all the way to the ruin of the old pier there, and there were some windsurfers in the drawing as well. It is important to show the rest of the beach-user community that kiters are responsible and care about the future of that location. Oh yeah, the company that owns the Racetrack wants to turn that area into a shopping mall with views of the water. No concept that people might want to get into the water...

get them to put a kite launch and parking by the flat water and this place would be top notch.

that jelly has the highest survival rate: since it looks like a plastic bag, no one will pick it up.

I think I happened to be at one of the early meetings of Albany City Council on this way back when they were just introducing the idea of this waterfront development to the community. I don't live in Albany, and haven't been following this, but I'm pretty alarmed by any development this scale and also on the water, and certainly would want to see environmental impact studies if this were in my town. I noted however, if it's the same project, the rep from developer seemed open to the needs of community, soliciting input, and at that hearing suggested they've thought of including a bicycle shop, and cafe for cyclists (also free live outdoor jazz music). Ofcourse they want to paint a nice picture, and now they've got windsurfers in their diagrams, so maybe they can add some kites ? Definitely a lot to weigh/consider on this.
Free your mind and your azz will follow. GC

Kudos to cleanup folks on Sat. Discouraging to see so much trash; encouraging to see a big turnout, including James. Racetrack beach looked almost nice afterwards...and there was some wind later in the day.

BTW looks like cleanup folks in Hayward found a kiteboard in a slough:
"Among the strangest finds at Eden Landing: a wakeboard with the owner's name and number on it and a Mr. T Pez dispenser.

"

I pity the fool whose board ends up in a dumpster along with a Mr. T pez dispenser :)
