I am not going to load my car with different kites for different spots. I know I will be at Stinson, and the south coast when I get the pass for a long drive. Not many days down there as it does not take much swell for it to be double overhead for Brian, and I usually have the family in tow, as my wife will kick my (*% if she does not get her sesh. I think the 7 will be better in the waves than the hir.
That said, I was pretty impressed with the lift and hang time of the 7. Quite a bit more than the type 6, and not much off of the pace of my 13 zh, which is quite a jumping machine. If you are fully about big air, and not unhooking or going to the coast, or want to get into that racing thang, then I have heard great things about the hir, but I have not tried one as of yet.
easy to sit and bs when it is raining, no?

What do you think, Bob, is it worth trading out my Type 6's for the new 7's? I love that the 6's are so versatile, and the 7's sound even more so, but the retail price is WAAAY more than I paid for the 6's last year. I'm not sure I can justify trading out such good kites if the 7's aren't remarkably better.

Another Instructor on the way Soon... but not to instruct..... Just to veg...
Marlys and I are headed down to Barilles and Ventana on the 14th - 22nd. We haven't reserved any hotels and were thinking we'd get down there are feel it out. Is this going to work, or is it stupid to come this time of year without reservations? We'd kind of like the option to move at will, but Marlys is pregnant, so we need to be somewhat safe in what we do....
Thanks in advance..

Have you ever done the 6-mile downwinder from the Hot Springs to Baja Joe's? Put it on your list of "must kite there" since it was truly remarkable. Drive through El Sargento from LaVentana ond follow the road (after it turns to dirt) around a point, to the large sandy crescent. I saw Sheldon there teaching and it is really safe. Wide open, huge sandy beach and killer access to a unique patch of water. I left the hot springs crescent on a 16 and by the time I got out to the real windline it was jacking huge-- totally lit-- most normals on 10 meters. Today I'm packing some smaller gear, I never should have ridden the big stuff out there-- best big wind-swell I've ridden except for very few other places (like Maui.)
About one-third of the way back and about a mile out it was so big (and you could lose so much ground) that the swell rides were EPIC. Toe-side, slash, heel-side, slash, repeat. For SIX miles. Then the occasional shore-break "wave ride" on the inside. You can tell, it was fun. Lobster and scallops last night with Joe and Angie and just another day at the office. OUT.

All a matter of cash...Cabal jacked up the price this year, I guess 'cus he thinks he can get it, and he is still below the other major players. The sixes are great kites - I have a 5 and 7 I am about to unload for cheap if anyone is interested. Also letting go of my 13 zh. If you are strapped, you can pick up my type 7s at the end of the season! What do you think, Bob, is it worth trading out my Type 6's for the new 7's?
All that said, the 7s are waay nicer than the 6. More stable, predictable, and lofty. I will have more to report after La Ventana. Picked up the new wave 2 bar, and I am optimistic about how you should be able to tune it...Since you can adjust the front lines, (nice cleat provided), as well as the stopper ball and the 5th line on the pulley, you should be able to rig it in full wave mode as well as ride it powered at the ball for lofty, one handed jumps. If you have never used the type wave set up, you will be amazed at how fun that can be. Even at Rio, you can do moves like a fully committed toe turn transition with the kite really low, and if you are about to blow up in the trough, you can just push the bar away, and surf the wave without penalty. I would imagine that the crossbows can do the same thing, but this is without any bar pressure, as you have to PUSH the bar away to fully depower. I was having some great seshes upwind on the 10 type wave in the big swell on the really windy days, just surfing the big ebb. Now to have all of that, but also be able to lock out the 5th line, and sky a full power, one handed jump like the zh.....well, thats the goods! At the end of the season, you could not get Gabe off of the wave bar, since you get so dialed into the full depower that it is rude to go back to a standard bar. Same with my wife...However, I still like the old school, throw it big and make a grab, and how do you do that easily with a crossbow? (no, I have never flown one, so I do not really know what I am talking about!)
Man, I must be getting hungry for Baja if I am spending this much time bsing 'bout kites!

Big D,
I was on that 6 mile downwind last year and lost one side of my spreader bar, about a mile out to sea. I made it to shore with the bar pulled all the way to one side, landed on a little beach with steep cliffs, and hung out until another downwinder rescued me by catching my kite and allowing me to hook the spreader bar back in.
I learned my lesson that day -- check everything before you launch!

One day of surfboard kiting, one day of snorkel doldrums then El Norte back on yesterday. Caught seven Dorado and feasted. Kite-looped on the beach with optional knee ride. Lost skin and style points. Already windy this morning, gotta' go. In case you're into fishing, I saw a guy catch (but not land) a sailfish in a 15' aluminum boat. Wild. At one point we had four lines out with Dorado on every single one. Then had to go kiting too?!
