Endlestorm:
come over to 3rd where there is wind. plenty of people to assist you with launching and landing. 3rd is a VERY good place to learn... just not at high tides.
Some say different, but they don't kite there often. Where do you think most of the regulars at 3rd learned to kite? Hint: we didn't travel to Alameda, Crissy, Rio, or the coast! If you've had a lesson and had a couple of post lesson water days, you're ready.

elli wrote:If you are average weight and get a bow, 12 may be too small for Alameda. But for light wind IMO you have to start with the right board, and not default to a huge kite. Light wind boards are also easy to ride, and it will speed up your learning. You can also build one yourself cheap.
Thanks elli and Lisa, I forgot to mention my weight at 165lbs and 6'2" - so a 12m will be my first kite I think.

Does anyone have an opinion on the wetsuit? Is a 4/3 mm full suit a necessity?
Thanks,
Thom

If you are fully committed to this sport, then a 4/3 wetsuit is a necessity. In the spring time (March-May), the water is pretty cold in all bay area spots and a 4/3 is a must, anywhere you kite. On the coast and Crissy, a 4/3 is mandatory year round. However in the summer time, at any of the interior spots like Alameda, Berkeley, 3rd Ave or Sherman you can get away with a shorty. If you're just starting out, you probably won't be going to Crissy or the coast, so for now you could avoid spending $200+ on 4/3 and you could get a shorty until the springtime.

Good luck!

I use 4/3 all year round everywhere in the bay area.

I too am new to the sport. I have had a few lessons. And I want to get out in the water. I just bought my kite and board off of ikitesurf.com. But I need to get a few other items. Where do most kiters buy there equipment from local? I am looking for a harness, and a helmet. by the way how is the dakine impact harness?

Go straight to SI. You'll learn in good wind and make good friends. Most are happy to help there. Much diff than anywhere else. NICER.
