One tip I got on the battens is that they are "too tight" in their little fittings. You can do one of two things to lower the risk of breakage:
1. Cut about 1/2 inch off each of them and then slip them back in. This gives them a bit of wiggle room to move upon hard impact.
2. You can hook the Velcro attachments a little looser by fastening them a with slack.
I did option number two and have only broken 2 battens in the last 3 - 4 months. Plus the fact that battens are only $1 each doesn't bother me at all. Hopefully in future interations they will make them out of something more solid, but in the mean time I'm totally fine with this as the kite is so damn sweet. Enjoy.

battens
Yup, it's a drag when they break, especially if they puncture the canopy. Not a big deal, but if you are anal about keeping your gear in good shape.........then again controlling things and keeping things prestine is a bit anal.......so from a big picture pt. of view you have things to work on, right ;-)
When I get my kites, I order them with an extra set of battens. I will drop my kite hard, and will break them, I like to learn new moves and push my limits......the kites fly just fine w/out them, it's when you depower the kite a lot that it starts to deform by the LE, not a big deal at all....plus, you should not be looking at your kite anyway, you should be feeling it!
Many people break the battens when they fold the kite the wrong way.
Scotty - I'll make sure you spend some time on the 12m this weekend, unless it's too windy ;-)
Get some, Z.

Has anybody switched from a 9,12,16 quiver (06 Vegas) to a 10,14 quiver (Rebel) and noticed any loss of range particularly on the high end? Is missing the kite in the middle keepng you on the bottom or top of the other kites (missing the sweet spot). Thanks, Wade

hey scotty, where have you been? i have a 7,9 and 12m vegas you can also demo. rberrisbob wrote:Zeev, I'd love to demo the 12m Vegas this weekend, wind permitting. Believe it or not, the only Vegas I've ever ridden was a 10m '05 one that I demo'd for about 15 minutes before buying my Rhinos.
If I forget to ask you when I see you this weekend, maybe you can remind me.

I have been flying my 07 12M Rebel now for a few months and love it.
I find that it has very good low end range and a pretty decent high end. It seems to be very well aerodynamically designed and when not in use it hangs almost perfectly in place overhead. It seems to remain firm and powerful when needed but not too much jerking power pulls. Very easy to jump and easy to turn. The 5th element bar takes a little learning to figure out how to repower it after you have pulled the depower strap. You have to pull it down then out at 90 degrees to get it to release fully.
It almost relaunches its self when down (provided there is enough wind..lol)
One annoying thing i noticed the other day when riding at crissy for a few hours in good strong winds the red plastic cylinder on the 5th element release whistles in the wind like when you blow air across a beer bottle.
Anyone else noticed that? I am going to put a piece of tape across it to change the wind flow. Kinda annoying after a while
