Labor Day Weekend - Alameda

Just throwing caution into the wind, ..., no, not the local NorCal kite company :mrgreen:

Alameda is going to be packed by beach goers labor day weekend.

If the wind blows, probably going to be marginal if it does, please don't rig. If you do, please stay out of the beach, don't walk the kite on the beach, and if you end up down wind, land your kite in the water and do a self rescue, and wrap your lines.

If its really windy, which is probably not going to happen, then people are most likely going to pack up and leave. If you plan on kiting here, plan on kiting towards sunset. Also be aware that high tide is early afternoon, so the beach will be narrow.

Common sense, common courtesy, if we self police ourselves, then we can continue on unrestricted kiting access here in Alameda.

Agreed. As every year is the same, give it a rest on the holidays at alameda. Unless people are gone because there is so much wind, please refrain from FYYCICOIP (flying your yellow cabrinha into crowds of innocent people). Seriously though, everyone, all brands, all skills.

I plan on body dragging down the beach with my two line wipika and Slingshot LFT securely leashed to my harness.

:( Unfortunately, I'm stuck there this weekend. My siblings are pissed for me having to ditch them all the time whenever I get invited to family outings. Oh, you got a party today? Great, I'll see you ... oh sorry, wind meter just pegged, gotta go, I'll make it up to u. I was planning a road trip, but I was peppered with guilt trip.

I gotta put in my dues and keep peace.

Hey Ramsey, can I demo your two line Wipika? Always wanted to try a two line inflatable. :mrgreen:

you know, those Labor day and such weekends are just so. . . . crazy and crowded. People come at 7AM to claim the spots. For some one like me who lives right across the beach that pretty much means - stay away.... too many people, families + kids.... I just stay home, drink and catch up on some movies and play with my little dude. Or wait, could it be windy at SI? :shock:

Hey,
I'm going to be visiting bay area this weekend and thought about bringing my gear and checking out Alameda. I'm a beginner and just want to get some time in the water. Should I even bother?

If there is wind and beach goers are gone, any local rules that I should be aware of?

Alameda winds in the middle of summer is like San Diego, minus the throngs of hot chicks in bikinis. Yes, it will be packed with beach goers. Its an annual ritual for me to wake up on labor day very early in the morning, brew a cup of Peet's coffee beans (home made latte), and help pick up trash. You'll find gold mines of diapers discarded all over the place.

Read the first two posts (mine and Yuri's).

If it blows and the spot becomes rideable with 10 to 12 meter kites, the crowd will disappear. If not, then best to stay away, unless you have a boat or a jetski, then you can launch farther away from the buoys.

Your chances of riding there is about 20%. Bring your 12 meter just in case. Wait towards sunset and see what the more experienced riders are doing. Don't get disappointed if you don't get a ride. For once, we need to keep the beach goers happy and out of danger.

I'm stuck there this weekend, so I'll help monitor the beaches for clue-less kiters rigging and flying that will put beach goers at risk.

If you see somebody rigging Liquid Force C kites, that would be me. Introduce yourself, and I'll even give you pointers.

Don't be surprised if you decide to rig anyway in marginal conditions and somebody walks up to you and ask you not to do it.
