Stolen cars at Ocean Beach

Truck stolen from parking lot near Beach Chalet today. Another vehicle broken into on Tuesday at Wise Surfboard lot. Police have a suspect in most break-in and stolen cars at Ocean Beach.

Here's a description from SFPD:

Philippino male - 5'7" Medium build, Short black hair

Drives a Gold or Silver Honda Accord.

Watches you stash your keys in the fender and steals or rips off vehicle while you surf or kite.

Look out for this bad guy and call 911. The SFPD want this guy and have undercover PD working Ocean Beach trying to nab him.

Dang, that's almost an uncanny dead on description of me, I'm a Filipino male driving a silver honda, short black hair, but a bit taller 5'11".

Yeah, Ocean Beach has a lot of yahoos. If you read the posts on surfline, a lot of cars get broken into, so watch out for your sutff.

Whenever I surf there, I just bring a couple of bucks enough for food, and leave the rest of my wallet at home.

Last time I surfed there, there was a dude that was hovering around my car, I forgot my booties, and was running back to my car. I freaked him out and he walked away as fast as he could.

Sorry to hear about the stolen truck. I'll keep my eyes peeled, Sunday should be a good surf session there.

On serious note, no one should be stashing keys on their vehicle. That would obviously be a bad idea since OB thieves have used that method for a long time.

One option is the lock box which can be purchased for about $15.

Thanks for the description, very sorry about your truck.. There have been breakins at the Safeway parking lot. And more breakins in the outer Richmond avenues (high 40s). Gladly make an citizens arrest if I catch this guy in the act. If you see someone suspicious take a picture of his face, that should make him nervous.

How to (hopefully) find your stolen car (before the city tows it).

1. Call Dept of Parking and Traffic and entire license # to search for new citations. Chances are you got Parking tickets, so get the cit #(s) and call back to speak w Dept of PT, give them cit # and ask the locations of the Parking tickets.

2. Go find yur car.

I did that today, (my car was stolen a week ago from here on Haight St.) and found my car 5 blocks from my place. Don't ask what was my "neighbor" thinking? because people get away with this all the time. Ignition switch trashed, but car is otherwise fine.

My fault for not taking more care, and I felt bad not only becaue I lostr car, but worried that someone was comitting more theft w it (from the looks of the stuff they left in car, very likely--but highly unlikely for police to pursuit).

So the moral of my little story is :
"Be a proper custodian of your carma, or your carma might get messed up in someone else's karma."

And my (expensive) lesson of the week is:
OLD CAR/NO ALARM = USE THE CLUB

Update on the Ocean Beach car thief:
The local Richmond Review rag wrote :The "Surfer Car Booster" is busted. Great undercover work by the SFPD nabbed the suspected car thief on Oct 9th at Ocean Beach. He preyed on surfers who stash keys under car fenders. He also has stolen car warrants from San Mateo.
Give a thumbs up to the SFPD who patrol Ocean Beach, they nailed the dude.

Good, but I wouldn't lower the guard, my impression is there's a lot of this going on.
The person who stole my car is obviously not thinking logically, and (from evidence of stuff found in my car) has a gun. Think twice before approaching any thief on your own.
