So I guess I do need a tutorial... Scotts today was apparently knee to waist high?... whose knees and waist are we talking about, exactly?

Turned out to be a nice waist to head high surfing session at the point and reef breaks over the weekend in Santa Cruz. Crowded, but fun, waves were consistent, lots of paddling because of the strong current.

Localism doesn't suck nearly as much as the flocks of mindless sheep that paddel out and sit right next to you, when there are miles of empty beach to choose from.

Nice shots of you on those waves though.
The water angle has problems too. But I agree a straight on shot is easer to interpret than kite angle. Interssting kitecam video and interesting discussion following the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2KPa25wjKA The guy on the waves says the kitecam underestimates the wave size... supporting my assertion that those waves were triple ovehead in the pictures even if its hard for you to appreciated easily (I know they were in real life).

Gabe,

I have to argue against you on this one. There is at least 3X Jeff's height above him in your pic. He's only mid face, and in a water level shot at Mav's, there's probably 10ft. below the waterline out of the camera's view. If he's crouch down to about 5ft tall, then from the board to the lip is at least 20ft. From the board to the actual bottom of the wave has got to be 15ft. That's at least a 35ft. wave face. I'm pretty sure Jeff's not 10ft. tall, so that's more like 5X or 6X. In otherwords, about 4ft. Hawaiian. :)

Come on - give our boy some credit! I know a lot of guys who can kite in double or triple overhead, but only a few can handle serious size like Mav's. Hell, HMB beachbreaks are triple o all the time, right? :^o

This is NOT triple over head (referring to the picture DSC01291.jpg two posts prior).

While it is a good photo of a GREAT kiteboarding moment (by a great local kiteboarder), calling that 3X OH is just plain WRONG (in more ways than one). First, that spot does not even break at triple overhead. Second, FWIW, I was there that day launching and landing (I know what a wimp I am and I think you worked on editing the video shot by Travis and Jeff from the ski) that day was more than triple OH. Third, careful study of the picture using the standard method of evaluating wave face height size using points-of-reference of known size (the surfer taking into account stance) indicates the wave is OVER 5-6X OH (so I don't know what macho or 'disrespecting' system of wave height measurement you use). Finally, you are doing a disservice and potentially insulting Jeff (and Chip, Steve, Shawn and Travis and all surfers who have ever ridden a really big wave) by calling that 3x OH.

So while it is great (really relevant, epic shot) to introduce that photo into the discussion, it is hardly appropriate to mis-represent one of the most awesome kiteboarding photo of this hurculean kiting feat for the purpose dis'ing my claim of 3X OH. No need to do that to school a wannabe like me. No argument from me that this pic is WAY MORE MACHO and radical than my pedestrian shots (and a better camera angle, too) - but it is not close to 3x over head. Cheers.

(Oh, and by the way, I am not entirely new to this wave height estimation stuff as I have been surfing at a reasonably informed level consistently since you were still in diapers or 34y in 6 US states and 5 foreign countries).
