best spots in USA

Post by traver » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:47 am

Hello, i would like to ask you about the best spots in USA because i am going to work there for 6 months, i am from Barcelona, spain.

I have chosen San Francisco but i can change the city if i want because i am gonna work as internship and i could find another studio of architecture in other city (i study architecture). if you know some other spots you can tell me ;) maybe in miami, but i want to improve my english and i think in miami there are too many people speaking spanish...

Well, is there enough wind to sail almost everyday in San Fran? i would be there from june to december, is the water very cold? is there public transport to go to the best spots? because i dont think ill be able to buy a car there, i have a scholarship, 1000 euros per month, like 1400 dolars, do you think is enough to live in san fran? i have seen renting a room is quite expensive, isnt it?
too many questions!!!

My weight is 75 kilograms and 1,8 meters high, i have the naish helix 12 meters, do you think is a good kite to sail in San Fran?

Well, i know i have asked too many things, i hope somebody will be able to answer some of them ;)

Thank you and maybe see you in the water in few months!
happy new year!

It's hard to beat bay area from April to October for kiting but with $1400/month, you might have to live like the migrant day workers. Most places are not practical to go kiting using the public transportation. You might be able to live close to Crissy and walk to go kiting. I have seen kiters without cars able to get a ride from the SF to 3rd from other kiters in the past.

Buena suerte.

i have cell but i am still in spain, it must be expensive calling from america to europe i think, if you want add me by msn and we can talk for free.... papatraver@hotmail.com

it seems i need at least 2000 dollars/month to live in SF and maybe i would be able to buy a destroyed car...it must be cheap...hehe

how many knots are there usually? maybe my helix 12 meters is too big?

thanks to everyone!

Traver-
SF is your best choice.
We have the best public transportation, best and most diverse archarteure, most consistant wind and probably the best spots to kiteboard..
We also have lots of GIRLS, many students, really good community and loads of options to live (and the prices are falling).
Enjoy,
L.M.G.

I think you are misleading this guy, I don't think it's practical to go kiting using the public transportation, also, coming from Europe, our public transportation might be a joke. As far as falling prices, the home price might have dropped a liitle but he isn't buying anything with $1400/mo and if anything rent is going up not down.

When I started kiting in SF bay, I did not own a car. I did take public transportation to Alameda a few times (Bart to Fruitvale from SF, then a bus takes you right to Crown Beach), you can also take SF Muni to Ocean Beach and Chrissy. I also had rides from fellow kiters (THANK YOU), rented a car every weekend for one season, and joined Flex car for another season.

As far as rent, there are plenty of rooms for rent with other students for under a $1000 a month.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

I tend to agree with Sonny. Renting a car could cost you a lot if you want to ride whenever possible. i used to go with citycarshare, but from the city to San Mateo, it ends to be around 30$ the day. Maybe public transportation is available, but it is slow, and 1 or 2 hours drive when the wind is blowing could make you desperate. Overall, San Francisco is a great city, but you need to be able to afford it or it may be unpleasant. -Scooter- ;) is fine though, but you re limited to Crissy and OB, then it depends on your experience. For 75kg, my main kite is a 9m, for those spots. Except heavy weight and champs, 12m may be too big.

Anyway, you should not make your choice on Kiting spots, but on the quality of the intership you may find. With a good job, you may be able to afford kiting anywhere in the world later. It is all about priorities.
