Don't beat yourself up..I have been there..Jeff has been there..now you have been there..I wish you had takin' my words to heart??.. as the system can be "Brutal" fo sho...You my friend are a brave man!!!, and it takes a lot of gut's to even talk to a law firm that has a history like they do.Holy Hell.. the guy I talked to looked like the guy that killed jesus?? his fingers were long and he had pointed teeth!!! when the elevator opened to there office.The first thing I saw was a full grown man in tears????..I wanted to push the down button and get ta hell out of there.. Pam said don't be a "Big Sissy" I said holy crap!! The guys desk is granite with a sword on the door to his office and a picture of gold handcuffs with the hands still in them.

All of a suddin' I had to pee!!! so I asked the guy if he had a bathroom he replied NO!! and said there is a public bathroom in the basement. I said I'll be fine thanks.. as I felt a little trickel run down my leg, as I tryed to push Pam in front of me.. so I could hide behind her.. I felt like I was going to pass out.. then he reaches out to shake my hand so as did I..his hand shake felt like a pair a pliers as he said who might you be. I looked at Pam and said Oh Mommy!! he said your mother lookes vary young. I started to laugh and said Max and this is my wife Pamela and were just here to sign the release papers.

So the guy pushes a button on the wall and I thought he said?? have judy bring me my handcuffs but in reality he said have judy bring me the park file draft.

Well sorry about the story book .. but now every time they look out the window of the 42 floor of that building in Oakland and look down at "Crown Beach" they will be thinkin' I wonder if I could pick him off from up here. JK We will always love you Greg B. Boyington.

Back on subject. Has anyone found out what ordinance there supposedly is regarding teaching a family member at Crown Beach. I have not kited at Alameda nor am I really interested in kiting there since I live closer to other spots with more wind. I have delt with similar issues regarding access and have found out that most cities do not have access properly addressed and most do not know what heck I am talking about when I press in for documentation. Is there something in writing (code, ordinance, law, etc) that forbids teaching someone else for free. Is there even jurisdiction since it is in the water (tidal waters). I've kited for 9 years and my wife is just learning. I have some lessons lined up for her but will be damned if I am going to pay some one else to teach product safety, trainer kite related stuff and body dragging. My experience coupled with the fact that this person is the most important person in my life would qualify me to be safer than some kid trying to teach a buddy. If the police were called because someone was teaching a friend (for free) safely, WHAT WOULD THE TICKET SAY ON IT? There are not many spots where one can walk out in shallows and Alameda sounds like one of the few that would fit that environment.

Welcome to politics beach. she has and WILL call the cops on you even if you were able to legally be there because anyone that does NOT bring them business is an opponent and an enemy. Although, I bet if you purchase a kite from Boardsports it would all of the sudden be legal for you to give the lesson.

The problem is that technically no one is supposed to even laucnh a kite from anywhere but Boardsports. Not even Boardsports is supposed to be giving lessons in front of shellgate. But they do it. And it is ok for them because they own the beach in the cities eyes. I am technically not supposed to laucnh my kite from in front of my house but I do it and no one gives me crap. But after this post, guess what, I don't exclude the possibility there might be a cop at my door in a few minutes. You want 8 years of these stories, PM me. It's absolute BS that pisses off each and every single person on this beach. But for some reason they continue to exclude and alienate the local kiting community in hopes to make a few extra bucks. This is NOT ok!

So if you plan on teaching and not giving a tip to Boardsports, plan on doing it under the radar. Maybe just see if they are there and do it another time lower down the beach. see, even though you are not making money teaching a friend, they take it as a threat. And I too dont like seeing people who dont know how to kite teach people. But from the sound of your situation I would see no legal or logical reason you shouldnt be able to.

They need to make a radar detector for Boardsports.

I don't know all of the politics at that beach, but I used to follow it years ago on ikitesurf. Personally, I would call the police myself before I go to that beach and ask what ordinance would I be breaking if I kited there or taught my wife there. If they cannot answer that basic question, then I would take the name of that officer and have that as my ace in my pocket for when the police would be called by someone else. There cannot be law without it established on the books somewhere. Also, I would find out what jurisdiction would there be withthe city if it is in the bay (water) and not on the land. I did similar research at the little lake at Shoreline which is supposed to be for windsurfers only. It sounds like a very similar situation. There is a business that runs out of this lake (which is not a private lake but a city park). They repetedly have kicked out kiters while pumping up stating they are not allowed. They have been very successful in keeping kiters out. I researched all of the city ordanances that would forbid kiting and found none with the exception of a posible clause stating that all local rules are to be followed, but those rules need to be written somewhere. I went to the business "under cover" and asked for all posted and written rules of the lake. Guess what, there are no rules written about no kiting. I am just waiting for one of those days when I want to kite a lake and I will have all of my paperwork in the car ready. I also asked the police department what would happen if... they did not know.
