Nice research done RPskater. While I dont plan to do any teaching for a few seasons it will be nice to be able to show my wife some things once I have the experience under my belt.

Re: ANYONE CAN TEACH A FRIEND FOR FREE AT ALAMEDA!

RPskater wrote:Just to clear things up. I did call Donna at East Bay Regional Parks this morning and got the clear scoop. I asked her if it was ok for me to teach a family member kiteboarding on Crown Beach. It is perfectly fine to teach a family member or friend to kiteboard at Crown Beach provided that there is no money exchanged for that activity and that it is exactly what I said it was, teaching for free. I am perfectly fine to teach my wife without issue (as long as I am doing this activity in a safe manner of course). On the flip side of this issue, there are people from time to time that claim they are just teaching a friend but are in fact teaching for money. That is the issue that the parks do not allow. I hope that is clear enough for everyone. If you want to know for yourself directly from the horse's mouth, then you can call her too (Donna)at (510) 544-3171. Case closed! :!:

Thanks for making this call and responding with an ACTUAL ANSURE-
This is pretty much the SAME INFORMATION told to me by Anne Rockwell years ago.. so nothing has really changed.
TO MAKE IT CLEAR:
Jane and Rebecca dont just toss "people" off the beach for helping each other out, and they NEVER HAVE to the best of my knowledge removed anyone that wasn't a competitors Instructor or acting very poorly in some other way... Anyone can teach their friend a pointer for two for free on public beaches.

Enjoy-

Like I said...There are reasons for these rules..some seem just wrong but in the end you will find they are there to protect all of us that use the beach. I found out the hard way and as a fellow kiter I think you guys should just take my word on this. I for one live across the street from crown beach and have seen people try to teach there husband or wife? I know because I asked. most of the time it ends the same?? they just don't know how to teach. there are some that have this skill but still make mistakes that could cost us our access to kite here.

Keep the stoke.. If you want to teach join there team..

Maybe we can start up the Jeff Ruoss bailbond company for any future unlucky victims of the shack. All proceeds will help the city pay off the hundreds of thousands of dollars it takes to fly in a helicopter and the whole squad of alameda police to aid the selfish desires of the queen(s).

ouch!
where's the l0ve??
here's a different take rpskater,i have some instructor friends, and one of
them paid another instructor to teach his wife, why?because he's smart.
because teaching a loved one, anything, is hollow ground,a minefield of
potential frustration,and there's a 50/50 chance it'll lead to an argument,yelling.
i think we've all seen it.
best thing is forget she's ur wife, and pretend she's a paying customer, take deep breathes
and have the patience of a zen master....you'll need it.
just my take,NOT drumming up business for BSsports.
and believe friends should be able to teach, shadow friends, but please.....safe
peace,unity,love & havin' fun.

I understand the dynamics of teaching family members. I went through that 20 years ago with my wife when snowboarding started. I believe kiteboarding is more difficult to teach. That is why I have broken it down in stages. Both my 13 yr old son and wife have gone through stages of learning as to minimize problems. Both learned to wakeboard first. That gets the board skills down so we can consentrate on the kite. I have done the trainer kite with my son for 2 years and my wife for four 1 hr sessions. Did the big kite on the sand at the coast with each of them as well. Bought the Progression Beginner DVD(the newer one) to use as a guide for the mental understanding and plan to do a body dragging with each of them. THEN I will hand them off to jet ski assist kite lessons out in the open away from crowds. And safety is always emphasized throughout.

yes, it was advertised as we wanted people to know we were there and WE ARE team riders for Live2Kite. BUT....Suave and I had 8 of our OWN kites there, our own compressor to pump those kites up and some chairs. No food was sold or eaten by anyone but Suave and me and no money was exchanged. Only smiles.

Go pump your yellow cabrinha and make yourself useful.

so after 7 years of watching kiters teach their wife's and or friends
i see a lot of miss teaching and half assed teaching
like
when the wind picks up the so called teacher, jumps on a 10 meter and go's kiting..
and leaves the student with the 12meter unattended.. kiting..

also
they teach them to water start and ride going out
but....
forget or neglect to teach them how to turn around and come back\or self rescue
and safety the kite...

so called team riders park in the launch zone thinking that they are all that
or are exempted from the guide or to lead from example..
i.e park in the L.Z.
not drag out
stay 200 feet outside
do not come a shore, and bullshit with friends or worm your feet, with your kite 50 feet from the road...or in the middle of the L.Z.
poach a privet L.Z.
and the list could go on and on

also you do not have too
fly a trainer only at alameda
you can fly it any where you got say, 10 to 15 mph of wind
like chzer chazes park in berkeley
or ocean beach

i guess theirs a reason
some of you have a big yellow buss...

some of the best demos ive been too where with sling shot
and kite naked

who's pro and team riders took the day off kiting to ensure a safe lz
and riding area
answer questions and setup and breakdown and help in any way they could..

they checked out the rides who took their kites
not just let some one ride one of their kite's
and have some popcoRn
kitenaked did have M mike ,Q up some fine viddles...
and there rider's took care of business...
