It might be true, I know you (Kris) were still out right before we left and Paul was out too, and we saw cousin Ovi up at the upper launch setting up and we talked to him before we left and his kite was red with black tips...
Hmm... I'll email cousin Ovi and ask him... if he did, how strange...

I mean, I don't know really who it was since I didn't actually witness it but Ovi was flying a black Cab with red tips but I wouldn't have thought that he'd do something like that.

Thats who I was kiting with,
I went out to dinner with him Sunday night too. We talked about instructing, IKO, etc... He's been an instructor for many years now, I've never heard anyone complain about his instruction... but I've heard many people complain about his risky kiting around them..
strange part is he was extra safe while kiting the kicker! He waited extra long for the other riders (for him), actually I was rather impressed with our conversation and his safer kiting-
I'm going to speak to him about this stuff, see what the deal is.

just to be clear there are multiple riders of red kites with black wing tips attempting unhooked moves. It's not me so I can't take credit for being an asshole this time, however.

I heard back from Ovi and there always two sides to every story...

WHO did what dosn't really matter... Everyone kinda screwed up..
Ovi shouldn't be jumping on the inside, Paul, hold your line...
but I kinda understand when someone does some weird stuff around me (or I think they might) I give them extra room for error..

Who the hell launches a jump heading right at someone they don't know (meaning they haven't talked about it or know each other's styles)? My guess is if Ovi edged hard up before the jump, Paul assumed he was trying to go upwind of him? Seems like Paul did the right thing by carving downwind if they were really that close.

some riders will always defy logic and skill..
when I approach a rider I glance at their kite and try to lock mine in high or low.. then I watch their eyes.. if someone s approaching me wide eyed I will sometimes turn around rather then loose allot of ground.. If they dont look at me I assume they dont know I'm there.
My only rules are AVOID COLLISIONS and Be respectiful- NEVER take someone out with a kite-

funny thing about kiting is that you really can't rely on some standard right of way....on a flood tide, lighter wind, everyone is cramming upwind, so you have a pinching contest. In that case, starboard should take it, and if it is close, I will point at the other kiter, and give him a thumb to take it upwind....I will fall off, and pass close to his stern.....standard yachting procedure...
But in our sport, things change...if it is windy, with no prob going up wind, I know some guys are looking to boost. In that case, cutting downwind of them cramps their style, and they lose that pass. So, I might pinch a bit, let them jump downwind of me, and I will do my thing when I pass em...There are plenty of guys who jump inside...My kids, Ollie, J-gar, the north guy with yellow shorts...(sorry I don't know your name)...any myself if it is not too crowded, and the flood sets up nice ramps on starboard. We all seem to stay out of each other's way pretty well, since we know what the other guy wants.....
so, sometimes pinching is better than cutting downwind. What can make things interesting is when it is windy, and there are nice waves inside with the flood. There is no good way to mix a jumping rotation with the surfboards. We know the Gur's like it inside, but they try pretty well to pick their spots. We have had family fights with Brian getting pissed at me when he is unhooking and I am on a surfboard. We all could do a better job, myself included, of looking at people on the beach coming and going, and staying the heck out of their way, as some folks are not as experienced, and need room getting on and off the beach.
Paul and Ovi are both great guys, and it is bummer that there was a mix up. I guess one goal for us all is to not do something quick and unexpected near another kiter if we can help it.....

good idea...go to a SFBA board mtg...submit the idea. If not already a member, join and support. This is the kind of thing they do best; protect, improve, and possibly open new access. They are well connected with all the govt agencies that will need be be consulted and approve. For example: to put sand bags that close to the water, the proper type like used at the Delta, and filled with the proper material like at Coyote Pt., the BCDC will need to approve. One of the SFBA board members is on the BCDC. Will take time and perseverance, but i expect you plan to be around awhile :=)
