Haven't been on for a few days to respond. When I'm riding a surfboard in front of the launch, I try to always be aware of guys throwing down tricks...Chris and Jeremie were both out there that same day and I was staying out of their way (I think), no pinching contests, plenty of smiles and waves.
Usually the guys on twintips throwing big tricks in front of the beach do long tacks into the channel to make up plenty of ground; Ovi was doing short tacks and pinching really hard especially after his transition from starboard to port next to the reeds.
If he was really setting up to jump in the spot where our altercation took place... I've never seen anyone else jump there. It was about 50 ft. from the reeds with almost no safe space downwind and he hardly had any board speed yet. I thought he was pinching, and I bet anyone else who kites at Sherman regularly would have thought the same thing.
I don't make a point of turning downwind of anyone who is setting up to jump...Duh.
Point is, he made the assumption that I was an idiot who didn't know what I was doing. Assuming I was a newbie (hmmm, riding strapless on a crowded day at Sherman, probably not...), and given his position in the community, I don't think the appropriate response was to yell at me "YOU IDIOT!". Especially given that, in the area immediately in front of the launch on a Sunday, it's absurd to expect that there aren't lots of confused newbies out there are confused by someone who doesn't appear to be acting safely or following the local guidelines (No Jumping within 200 ft. of the beach).

Re: sherman traffic
Again, that NEED to throw down every tach is really annoying. I will often tach 5+ times just to wait for a clearing as I know when I jump sometimes i can land a good football field downwind.
It will always be a problem as long as kiting is around. It is really just part of the attraction to the sport-to be seen! I have sorta come to accept this as I realize if I was as good as the guys who did this I would probably do the same thing. :( But the anxiety to throw a trick when in close quarters with someone else has to stop.

Re: sherman traffic
crap
I'm in prison in Chicago (ok at a trade show but it feels like the same thing) so I only wish I were there to get annoyed at the showboatin' crowds this weekend
You lucky bastards
Don't hurt anybody including yourselves

I did exactly what you describe to avoid a pinching match with an overly aggressive kiter (who recently somehow decided he was qualified to become a kiting instructor in the Bay) who was throwing -- and mostly blowing -- big unhooked moves directly in front of the launch inside the buoys.BAK_iphone wrote:Well yeah it's all muddled and standard ROW differs from wave ROW, but main thing to go with the flow, be cool and have fun. More often than not I'm happy to just veer downwind and go around rather get in a pinching match. You can always tell when you see the guy bearing toward you, powering up and edging harder, it's clear what his intent is, so he can have it if he wants it that bad. You get more smiles yielding more anyway and a better vibe...

Not only did he call me an idiot and curse me out, he followed me into the beach when I headed in, threatening to beat the crap out of me when he saw me in the parking lot. The whole experience pretty much killed my kiting buzz for the day. I don't think I'll be recommending anyone to his kite school.
He's not 18, but he was flying a black kite with red wingtips just like Chris described.
Kid riding the red kite with Black wing tips was about 18. Kite was a Caution.
Paul, i got your back. I hate people who talk shit and ruin kite sessions...or my friends kite sessions...i hate chilling inside and 18 year punks with smart mouths too. i hate windy days when I can t kite. I hate non-windy days when I can...
Hate is a pretty bad word.

I don't like hate'n, have a little MFG in me though and have a big problem with disrespect.
We could really benefit to makin a flyer for Sherman that could be available to new people at Sherman. Resources...
Three fold with map from Delta Windsurf to the boat launch and everything in between.
Also our loosely written guidelines (not read as rules) that we are all responsible for.
Details for kiters and windsurfers.
Maybe the above is done already.
I will pay for first 1000 flyers printed and help with research on....
Anyone interested in offering bullet point style guidelines? Everyone welcome. Keep it concise.
