I know a number of beginners that really love taking downwinders at Sherman!

I second what Bruckidge said. When Alameda was dead a month and a half ago I switched over and did 3 downwinders at sherman. Now i'm good enough to handle 3rd Ave well enough. Plus Sherman is fresh water, love not coming in with salt mount :Pbuckidge wrote:I know a number of beginners that really love taking downwinders at Sherman!

For all you beginners out there (and I hate to write this) : The season is slowly coming to an end. If its a repeat of last year we only have about one more good month of kiting and then the days will be few and far between. Not to say there will not be days, the bay area will blow all year round at certain spots in certain conditions..... BUT the year is winding down.... and I think my girlfriend is secretly stoked about that.
Anyone have other input on typical late season kiting in the Bay?!? I''m already thinking about storm chasing..... gotta love this @#$%ing sport!!

Alameda has been dead since early June. To learn there now would only be an excercise in frustration and learning to stare at the water from the beach.
Once in awhile there have been some worthwhile days since then, but having learned there in April/May myself, I have to say its WAY more reliable then and glad I took my lessons when I did..

If you are worried about the wind starting to die off in Alameda, give me a shout.
I have the 17m Blade Fat Lady's available!! These are specifically designed for light winds or some of the bigger riders that need a little extra!!!
Dont let their size fool you. They are fun and stable kites and pretty fast considering their size.

As a someone who kites alameda a lot in light wind (with a big kite and board) I would disagree that a beginner should get a big kite and big board. It is hard to kite in light wind, you need perfect kite and board control. In addition, when it is light at Alameda you often need to go way outside, and the kite will not relaunch in these conditions so you can't drop it even durning lulls. Overall, not beginner skills. That being said, a big kite and board will give intermediate and better riders a lot more days at Alameda per season if that is your preferred location.
I agree with Charlie that one of the boat assisted places are probably the best options this time of year for beginners.
