Flock of Dead Birds floating @ 3rd

Post by marinkiter » Thu Sep 15, 2011 10:49 am

I was psyched to leave work early and try for a late summer sesh last night. I show up @ 3rd and the flag is flying, then before I can even pull out my wetsuit...stillness. I took this picture a few minutes later.

I noticed the wind shifted South on the Beach, which is what appeared to kill it for everyone near shore, but it stayed good in the channel and there were a bunch of people out there when I left. Hope everyone made it in safely.

Is this kind of shift normal @ 3rd in the late summer?

It seems the wind distribution was very uneven. Coyote had 12-14 while 3rd upper launch and inside had like 5-10 (SW direction), while channel was at 20...

I was there too. It shut down so hard, even the windsurfers were swimming back. Bummer

I made it back :) only had to walk 20 yards to the LL. Still my center lines were spun all the way up to the kite from body dragging and maybe 100 kiteloops. Me bret and Tony were out in the channel looking at everybody down and waiting for it to fill back in, at least that was my plan. The windline at one point went almost all the way out at one point and my kite went down out there. Luckily it went up again otherwise I was looking at a two hour swim at least with sw wind.

I think yesterday was more frontal wind vs. the seasonal thermal that serves up the San Bruno Pass special at 3rd

In Sept/Oct when the other spots get pissy, you best go to crissy

See my tips on the recent Waddell thread. Were the outer buoys NW? No. It was honking in the south bay, SW. When it does that (and I'm struggling to bike into the wind) I know that 3rd is offshore, and it makes me glad I checked windonthewater to see the big picture before driving.

Aloha's right, it was frontal movement, the gradients in the wrong direction. Welcome to fall. :(
