it happens about once every 2 weeks and several of us have been about a kite lines length away.. I wouldn't say its impossible to happen but its EXTREMELY EXTREMELY unlikely. even if the person were to aim for your kite there is 200 ft of wind turbulence between them and you.
Yeah.. it is kinda a buzz kill on your session when it happens. quite sad.
Def not going to keep me from kiting in one of the most beautiful places i have kited. On my way there now!

Crissy Field? The forecast doesn't look good though, plus it'll be flooding. "wind mostly outside but Low confidence forecast" it says. Where are people going today? (if anywhere?) Thinking racetrack or Waddell, but it would suck to drive all the way to Waddell only to get skunked.Loscocco wrote:On my way there now!

Anything is possible I guess, but my vote is "not a chance." In skydiving there is something called CReW (canopy relative work)... see image below... and if you've stood on a canopy in flight (inflated only by flight, and not a pump like our LEI kites), you'll know how hard it feels.kitenaked wrote:Would it break your fall enough to live if you landed on a kite horizontal? Assuming kite was really powered?
Crazy question...
Air may be compressible, but go pump up an air mattress to the pressure we inflate our kites, then jump onto it from 20 ft ledge... and you'll probably hurt yourself. Maybe less than if it had been asphalt... but I guarantee you won't be thinking it felt soft.

We're in a high pressure system and the winds are out of the south, big surprise!SFPete wrote:According to the 3rd Ave webcam, it just happened again...

A blimp (N28SQ) with a history of unresolved electrical problems was being used to transport paid passengers for pleasure rides. At the end of the day the ground crew were given rides. During a landing the electrical system failed. The pilot lost control and the aircraft hit the grass short of the landing zone and bounced along the ground until coming to rest near the top of a berm. The pilot told the passenger to get out and hold down the blimp; the passenger tripped as he got out and rolled down the hill. The blimp began to rise with the pilot holding on to an outside rail. The pilot lost his grip and fell to his death.
I witnessed this accident and the tarmac was definately not forgiving whatsoever...

You got it right... thats what happened. It happens a lot this time of year and you just gotta get back before it shuts off or wait for a puff to get thru. Makes for good entertainment if you have a beer in hand.Aloha wrote:Erin what happened -- inside really shut down?

But everybody goes out anyway knowing this will happen and just figures, "The Coast Guard will take care of us..."?
