do yourself and your back a favor and get one of these http://www.target.com/p/Coleman-Recharg ... /-/A-12622
i have used it for last few years
use it on the deflate valve, then top it off with usual kite pump. WAY easier on the back!

awesomekitepump.com

It's pretty good. It's bigger, but it's easier and quicker than the small, standard pumps. And there's hardly any resistance during the up-pump.

pumping slower will be better for your back. specially in the up stroke. try better technique. and if your back has problems. i suggest you also do something about it. ie. start doing back stretches and excercies. couple minutes a day will change your life..

or there are some electric options out there. also hella $$$

One of my friends took the upstroke valve out of his pump so it only pumps on the downstroke. Saves his back.

I like it. Especially 'cause it means I'm pumped up and on the water twice as fast as he is and getting more waves while he's still on the beach pumping!

That's what *I* call "being supportive of a handicap". Grin.

as I had plenty of back problems over the years too here my recommendation: Dont go out if your back hurts from pumping. Stay at home and do these stupid back exercises. Yes, they are no fun at all but they are typically your only way out. You need to build up more muscles in your back to keep it straightened out. Especially for kiting.

Once you are over the hump (2 weeks if you are luck and do it daily) get out on the water 2ice a week to keep the back strong.

Fix the back first and then go out regularly. G

This.

If your back hurts from pumping a silly kite, you are probably better off not kiting that day.

However, if your foot looks like it's made out of clay and someone mashed and twisted it up in a utterly unnatural way, you may not want to go out also. Hope it's feeling better!

On the other hand, if I had access to some crutches that weren't so hard on my armpits, it is quite possible that I could squeeze in a sesh here and there :D

It's doing as well as a broken ankle can two weeks later but the pain is almost gone and I may be able to stop taking meds pretty soon which is awesome. Definitely better than when I first saw it. Now that I think about it, I'm actually not sure what was more painful, the broken bone or the visual of it.

Out of curiosity what are these stupid back exercises you mention? I should probably be doing something. I feel injury prone these days.
